• STAGNATION: Progress among Mexican students in math, science and reading has remained largely stagnant since at least 2003 with most of them achieving well below the wealthiest countries education scores, according to the latest results of a global test of 15-year-olds.
• TEST: Known as PISA, the test has been administered every three years by the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) and shows Mexico showing few improvements even despite the fact that 400,000 Mexican students joined secondary education.
• SCORE: “Students in Mexico scored lower than the OECD average in reading, math and science. In Mexico, only 1% of students performed at the highest levels of proficiency in at least one subject and 35% of students did not achieved a minimum level of proficiency in all 3 subjects”, the OECD said.
• INEQUALITY: Despite 11% of some disadvantaged students achieving a top scores in reading, the OECD study confirmed that socio-economic status was as predictor of performance of most students in all three subjects (reading, math and science) showcasing the impact of Mexico’s inequality.
