• PLANT: A car manufacturer is scouting the Mexican states of Nuevo León, Jalisco and the Mexico City area as potential sites for a new factory of electric vehicles destined for the US market, according to a real estate source currently helping in the effort. The company is also exploring sites in China.
• FOOTPRINT: “This plant is fully automated and assemble the vehicles in 107 thousand square feet. It is very small compared to the mega large plants….They have to make the decision in 2020 for the plant to be operational in 2022”, said Sergio Reséndez of real estate broker Colliers International
• COMPANIES: Among the auto companies that potentially may be behind the project, a real estate source cited the Chinese manufacturer Geely. Since 2018, a different Chinese automaker BAIC Group expressed its intent of opening an electric car manufacturing facility in Mexico.
• NUMBERS: Despite a slowdown this year, Mexico is the seventh largest car manufacturing base in the world with 3.9 million light vehicles built in 2018; General Motors is the largest car producer in Mexico with more than 800,00 units manufactured in 2018.
