• OUTRAGE: The killing of woman from Monterrey who was shot dead in Mexico City on Monday prompted outrage after family and friends denounced a flawed judicial process that allowed her former husband to be freed despite an alleged attempt to kill her with a bat in January.
• PROBLEM: Shot in front of her children as the country marked International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, the case of Abril Pérez Sagaón showcased the growing problem of femicide in Mexico where 809 women have been murdered this year because of their gender.
• LETTER: In a public letter earlier this week, family and friends of Ms. Pérez Sagaón accused her former husband Juan Carlos García of being behind the murder and who was freed on a technicality by local judge in Mexico City despite here openly denouncing she feared for her life.
• JUDGES: “When we talk about gender violence, there has to be a great sensitivity of the judges. It cant be that this woman presents a complaint, feels that she is in danger of death on the part of her partner…and then the judge releases (the defendant)”, said Mexico City’s mayor Claudia Sheinbaum.
