• VIOLENCE: At least three people were murdered in the coastal city of Acapulco on Sunday while Mexicans enjoyed a long weekend in observance of Revolution Day showcasing again the security crisis that has engulfed the once glamorous beach resort in recent years.

• NUMBERS: Sunday’s murders occurred in three separate incidents including the shooting of a public bus driver along the Miguel Alemán coastal boulevard; according to Mexican Government data, at least 454 people have been killed in Acapulco between January and September this year.

• FRAGMENTATION: According to a local police intelligence report, at least 16 criminal cells are responsible for violence in Acapulco; the cells are splits from a larger organization known as the “Independent Acapulco Cartel” (CIDA) which was once aligned to the Beltrán Leyva organization.

• TRAVEL WARNING: The US Department of State has an active Do Not Travel advisory for Acapulco and the entire state of Guerrero; the US advisory encompasses other popular tourist areas in Guerrero like the resort city of Ixtapa-Zihuatanejo and the colonial town of Taxco.
