• MONEY: A group of Mexican oil workers have presented a complaint against ousted union boss Carlos Romero Deschamps for misdirecting some USD 2.6 million coming from workers paychecks and giving it away to help the country’s 2017 earthquakes recovery effort.

• ABSENT: With his whereabouts unclear, Romero Deschamps left his union boss post in October after holding the job for 26 years; government sources say that the Mexican Financial Intelligence Unit (UIF) is probing Romero Deschamps for money laundering and illicit enrichment.

• ILLEGAL: “In no case does Labor Law empower the employer or third parties to dispose of workers’ wages. In addition to being an abuse of authority and trust, it also constitutes the crime of illicit enrichment”, says Edgar Hernández Flores, one of the workers presenting the complaint..

• SIZE: With more than 128,000 workers, Pemex was the tenth largest employer in Latin America in 2018 and more than 103,000 of them are unionized according to the most recenT report presented by the company before the US Security and Exchange Commission (SEC).
