• BENEFITS: The number of Mexican workers not receiving government mandated employee benefits (vacation pay, Christmas bonuses and others) grew in almost half a million in the third quarter of 2019 with respect to the year prior, according to new data by Mexico’s statistics agency (INEGI).
• SHARE: Representing somewhere around 26% of Mexico’s active population, the number of Mexican workers with no employee benefits grew from 14.1 million in the third quarter of 2018 to 14.5 million in the third quarter of 2019, showing increasing precarious working conditions.
• INFORMALITY: “The magnitude of informality in Mexico can be seen in the lack of social benefits and the lack of access to social security that most Mexican workers face”, said a new report by IDIC, a think tank linked to CONCAMIN, an umbrella organization for several industrial sectors.
• PERSISTENCY: During the past 15 years -according to IDIC’s analysis- the Mexican economy has tended to generate employment opportunities at the bottom of the wage scale with most of the job posts available earning around two times minimum wage levels.
