• UNPREPARED: Mexico is unprepared to tackle a potential gas supply crisis given its inadequate storage capacity infrastructure only capable to cover less than 2 days of national consumption and which makes investment in construction of gas storage facilities a critical priority.

• CAPACITY: Mexico’s gas storage capacity only covers 1.5 days of national gas consumption, according to official data from the National Center for Natural Gas Control (Cenagas); in some countries in Europe, like Germany, gas storage inventories are estimated to cover 100 days.

• INVESTMENT: “This can be solved with investments in infrastructure that can be made relatively easy, with proper planning. It seems to me there’s much interest from the private sector”, said Tania Ortiz Mena, the head of IEnova, a Mexican unit of Sempra Energy, during an energy event last week.

• GOAL: Back in March 2018, the Mexican government goal regarding natural gas storage aimed for the country to have enough inventories to cover a minimum of three days of national consumption by the year 2022 which is equivalent to around 28 billion daily cubic feet of gas.
