• PROBE: Mexico’s Attorney General Office (FGR) is already conducting an investigation regarding a potential ransomware attack against the state-owned oil company Pemex for which officials have said they wont be making any payment, Government sources tell Reforma newspaper.
• RANSOM: According to Reuters, hackers are requesting from Pemex a ransom of around USD 5 million after attacking some of the company’s networks with Ryuk, a strain of malware that targets large companies and that has been associated in the past to Russian criminals with financial goals.
• WARNING: “I spoke with the director of Pemex a couple of days ago, the hacking did not reach the core area where Pemex’s confidential information is, but the personal computers of some workers, Fortunately it was so, but it’s a warning sign”, Arturo Herrera, Mexico’s Finance Minister said.
• VICTIMS: Earlier in the week, the company had downplayed the nature of the attack but Energy Minister, Rocio Nahle, admitted Thursday that it was a ransomware attack; previous victims of Ryuk include city authorities in the US like Lake City and Riviera Beach in Florida.
