• CONVERSATION: Mexican authorities in Mexico City are hosting talks this week between Newmont Goldcorp and local activists in the Northern state of Zacatecas with the goal of stopping local blockades that have affected operations throughout the year at the large open-pit gold-silver mine
• WATER: Since at least March of this year, activists and truck drivers in the Mazapil area of Zacatecas (a very tiny zone with just 17,500 habitants) have protested against alleged damages to the local aquifer; the company says that in some instances these protests are more about extortion.
• TRUST: “We trust the government will assert legitimacy and the rule of law, that they understand the risk of investment, employment, the development of the area and that they will offer the necessary guarantees”, said Michael Harvey, director of external relations for Newmont Goldcorp Mexico.
• PENDING: According to Mexico’s Interior Ministry, more than 60,000 depend directly or indirectly from Peñasquito mine; per the most recent figures, the mine produced 272,000 ounces of gold in 2018 and accounts for 0.17% of Newmont Goldcorp’s net asset value, this according to Scotiabank.
