• LOST DIAMONDS: Mexico’s Attorney General Office lost track of a cache of jewelry worth at least USD 3.4 million -including diamonds and other gemstones- that was confiscated from a suspected Turkish smuggler and that was supposed to be in the authorities’ possession since 2014.
• TREASURE: Records show that the missing gemstones were part of a larger collection of jewelry -worth USD 12.5 million in 2014- seized from several stores in Mexico’s Caribbean Coast -including in Cancún- which were presumably owned by Apel Çelik, a former Turkish banker.
• GOING MISSING: It was not until 2017 when Mexico’s AG Office learned through an internal investigation that some of the diamonds and precious stones impounded in 2014 could not be found prompting for the pressing of charges against the attorney who was in charge of the case.
• RIDDLE: Having transitioned into a new phase -which provides it with greater autonomy from the executive branch- Mexico’s AG office may now have to play a true detective at a time when Çelik -who was suspected to have smuggled the jewels into Mexico for sale- already passed away in Turkey.
