• TRIBUTE At least 35,000 residentes poured into Mexico City’s streets to pay homage to the late José José, Mexico’s most famous romantic ballads singer, as a hearse carrying his ashes traveled around some of iconic sites like the Palace of Fine Arts and Our Lady of Guadalupe Shrine.
• TRUE STAR Born José Romulo Sosa Ortiz, José José captivated audiences in Latin America for several decades since he performed “El Triste” (the Sad One) one of his most famous songs at an international latin music festival; he passed away on September 28 at age 71.
• FAMILY CONTROVERSY Known as the “Prince of Song”, José José sold more than 250 million albums; after his death, his relatives were in disagreement on what to do but in the end his body was cremated in Miami with half of his ashes staying there and the other half sent to Mexico City.
• INMORTAL “He has already become eternal, he is already immortal. Yes, his ashes will pass through here, he will be buried, but his energy will always be around”, said Atzimba Sandoval, one of the more 6,000 fans who gathered at a park in the Clavería neighborhood where José José grew up.
